Zurich Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Polarzauber, Food & Tips

People gathered around a decorated Christmas tree in Zurich

The Zurich Christmas market season opens on Thursday 19 November 2026, and for five weeks the city runs half a dozen markets at once, most of them within a 20-minute walk of the main station. The biggest is Polarzauber inside Zürich Hauptbahnhof, which stays dry whatever the weather does. Outside, you’ll find stalls in the old town lanes of Niederdorf, in front of the Fraumünster on Münsterhof, beside the Opera House at the new Bellevue Noël, and at Werdmühleplatz, where a choir sings from a tiered “tree” every evening. Entry to all of them is free.

Coming in by train with a suitcase? Leave your bags near Zurich HB and start with the market in the station hall.

Polarzauber at Zürich HB

The station hall has hosted a Christmas market since 1994. Until 2024 it was called Christkindlimarkt, and since 2025 it runs as Polarzauber, billed by its organisers as the largest indoor Christmas market in Switzerland, with around 100 wooden huts under the hall roof. Food and takeaway stands stay open an hour after the craft stalls, and the bars run until 23:30 on Thursday to Saturday. It is the obvious first stop if you arrive by train, and the best fallback on a wet evening.

Bellevue Noël on Sechseläutenplatz

New for 2026, Bellevue Noël fills the big square between the Opera House and the lake with more than 100 market and food stalls. There’s a fondue chalet and bar open until midnight from Monday to Saturday, a children’s area and a walk-in Advent wreath. It’s a short walk along the lake from Bürkliplatz, or one stop on the tram to Bellevue.

Münsterhof and the Singing Christmas Tree

The Münsterhof market sits on the cobbled square in front of the Fraumünster, whose Chagall windows are worth a look while you’re there. Its stalls focus on local shops and Zurich brands. Some take only cash and others only cards, so carry both.

Five minutes away on Werdmühleplatz, choirs stand on a tiered stage shaped like a Christmas tree and sing 25 to 30 minute sets. On weekdays they perform at 17:30 and 18:30, with an extra 19:30 slot on Fridays. At weekends the sets are at 14:30, 15:30, 17:30 and 18:30. The small market around it sells organic local food and opens in the afternoon.

Weihnachtsdörfli in Niederdorf

The old town market spreads about 70 decorated huts across the lanes and squares of Niederdorf, from Hirschenplatz and Stüssihofstatt down to Zähringerplatz and the Grossmünster. There’s an ice rink at Rosenhof, and the narrow streets around it are full of small independent shops. It’s the most atmospheric of the city markets after dark.

Zürcher Weihnachtsallee at Europaallee

Right behind the station, Europaallee hosts around 80 exhibitors who change every week, so a second visit later in December looks different from the first. A fondue chalet stands on Gustav-Gull-Platz and the Glüehstube bar on Europaplatz. A weekend mini market runs on 29–30 November and on the first three weekends of December.

Food and Drink to Try

  • Raclette scraped straight onto bread or potatoes, sold at most of the markets.
  • Cheese fondue in one of the chalets at Bellevue Noël or Europaallee. Book ahead for a weekend evening.
  • Glühwein, or the local white mulled wine, in a mug with a deposit you get back when you return it.
  • Roasted chestnuts (Marroni) from the street stands, a Zurich winter habit.
  • Tirggel, the thin honey biscuits Zurich has baked for centuries, plus Lebkuchen and Grittibänz bread men in early December.

Switzerland is expensive, and the markets are no exception, so budget in CHF accordingly and check prices on the stall boards before you order.

You can walk a loop of most of the markets in an afternoon: start at the station, cross the river to Niederdorf, follow the Limmat to Bellevue, then come back along Bahnhofstrasse past Münsterhof and Werdmühleplatz. A city day ticket covers the trams if your feet give out. Zurich Tourism keeps a full list on its Christmas markets page, including the ones in Winterthur, Rapperswil and Einsiedeln.

Tips for Visiting

  • Go on a weekday afternoon if you can. Saturdays in December get very crowded, especially in the station hall.
  • Time your walk for the Singing Christmas Tree sets in the early evening, when the old town is lit up.
  • Carry a card and a few francs in cash. Euros are not accepted everywhere.
  • Most markets close on 23 December. Only Polarzauber and Münsterhof open on Christmas Eve, and Polarzauber closes at 16:00 that day.
  • Travel light. The Niederdorf lanes are narrow, and a suitcase makes the evening hard work for you and everyone behind you.
