The Hamburg Christmas market at Rathausmarkt opens on Monday 23 November 2026 and runs until 23 December, with about 80 stalls in front of the town hall and a flying Santa who crosses the square three times every evening. It’s the best known of the city’s festive markets, but there are more than a dozen others, from the white tents on Jungfernstieg by the Alster to the adults-only Santa Pauli on the Reeperbahn.

The Best Christmas Markets in Hamburg
Rathausmarkt: the Historic Christmas Market
This is the one most people mean when they talk about the Hamburg Christmas market. The Roncalli circus company runs it, and the stalls are laid out in themed lanes: a toy lane, lanes for crafts and decorations, and a food lane. There’s a historic carousel for children and a brass quartet that plays carols every day except Saturday. The big draw is Santa Claus flying over the square on a sleigh with his reindeer at 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00, telling the story of Rudolph as he goes. Get a spot near the middle of the square about ten minutes early.
The market runs on green electricity, bans plastic packaging for food and drinks, and sells its own organic Glühwein made by a winery in the Palatinate. Around three million visits are counted each season, so weekday afternoons are far calmer than Saturday evenings.
WeißerZauber on Jungfernstieg
A few minutes’ walk from the town hall, the Jungfernstieg market sits on the edge of the Binnenalster. Instead of wooden huts it uses white pagoda tents, and there’s a historic Ferris wheel from 1899 with views over the lake and its floating Christmas tree. From 26 November, decorated fairy-tale boats (Märchenschiffe) are moored on the water below the market. The 2026 dates are 18 November to 23 December, closed on Totensonntag (22 November). Hours are 11:00–21:00 Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and 11:00–22:00 on Friday and Saturday.
Santa Pauli on the Reeperbahn
St. Pauli does Christmas its own way. Santa Pauli on Spielbudenplatz calls itself Hamburg’s “geilster” (coolest, roughly) market and opens earlier than the rest, on 9 November 2026, running until 23 December from 16:00 to 23:00. Expect live music every day, a “Glühwein on prescription” stall where you mix your own mulled wine, and strip shows on the main stage from Thursday to Saturday. Some areas are for over-18s only, so this one is for a night out rather than a family afternoon.
More Markets Around the City
- Spitalerstraße: the Hanseatic market in the shopping street between the station and the town hall, open until 27 December 2026.
- Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz and Fleetinsel: smaller markets in the Altstadt and Neustadt, easy to add to a Rathausmarkt visit.
- Wandsbeker Winterzauber: one of the longest seasons in the city, from 31 October 2026 to 1 January 2027.
- Neighbourhood markets in Eimsbüttel (Apostelkirche and Osterstraße), Winterhude, Barmbek, Ottensen, Blankenese and Harburg, where you’ll mostly meet locals.
On the four Advent Saturdays, a Christmas parade also goes down Mönckebergstraße at 14:00 and 17:00. Full listings and any changes are on the city’s official Christmas page.

What to Eat and Drink
- Glühwein, including the organic Rathausmarkt version, and Feuerzangenbowle, mulled wine with a rum-soaked sugar cone set on fire above it.
- Fish: this is a port city, so look out for fish rolls and other fish dishes next to the usual sausages.
- Bratwurst, roasted chestnuts (Maronen) and waffles, sold at nearly every market.
- Franzbrötchen, Hamburg’s cinnamon pastry. Bakeries all over the city sell it, and it travels well on the train home.
Mulled wine usually comes in a mug with a deposit (Pfand). Hand it back at the stall to get the money back, or keep it as a souvenir.

Tips for Visiting
- Visit on a weekday between 11:00 and 15:00 if you want to browse the stalls without queues.
- Totensonntag (22 November 2026) is a quiet holiday in Germany. Rathausmarkt opens the day after, and Jungfernstieg closes that Sunday.
- Most markets close on 23 December. If you’re visiting between Christmas and New Year, head for Spitalerstraße or Wandsbek.
- Dress for wind. Hamburg in December is damp and breezy, especially by the Alster.
- Carry some cash for smaller stalls, even though many take cards.
