The Heidelberg Christmas market opens on Monday 23 November 2026 and runs until Tuesday 22 December, spread over six squares along the old town’s Hauptstraße, with the castle lit up on the hill above. You can walk from one end to the other in about 20 minutes, stopping for Glühwein on Marktplatz, a skate on the ice rink at Karlsplatz and a look at the castle from the little forest of fir trees on Kornmarkt.

The Six Market Squares
The market isn’t one big square but a string of smaller ones, linked by Hauptstraße, the long pedestrian street through the Altstadt. Start at Bismarckplatz and walk east towards the castle, or do it the other way round and finish with a tram back to the station.
Marktplatz
The main square, between the town hall and the Church of the Holy Spirit. This is where you’ll find the Christmas pyramid, the craft stalls and the classic Glühwein stands. Santa’s house is here too, and children can have a photo taken with him for a donation.
Kornmarkt and the Winterwäldchen
A few steps further east, Kornmarkt turns into a small winter forest of illuminated fir trees. It has one of the best views of Heidelberg Castle in the whole market, and the Bergbahn funicular up to the castle leaves from the station just behind the square.
Karlsplatz Ice Rink
The ice rink on Karlsplatz sits right below the castle walls, and it’s the part of the market people photograph most. Skates are available to rent. Entry to the rink is paid, so check the current prices at the cash desk.
Universitätsplatz, Anatomiegarten and Bismarckplatz
Universitätsplatz, by the old university, is where students gather around the Feuerzangenbowle. The Anatomiegarten is a quieter, family-friendly corner just off Hauptstraße, and Bismarckplatz at the western end is the easiest square to reach from the station. The city lists any changes on Heidelberg’s official tourism site.

What to Eat and Drink
- Glühwein, red or white, and Feuerzangenbowle at Universitätsplatz.
- Bratwurst and Flammkuchen, the thin, crispy tart with crème fraîche, onions and bacon that’s common in this part of Germany.
- Roasted chestnuts, sugared almonds and Lebkuchen for the walk between squares.
- Heidelberger Studentenkuss, the chocolate sold in the old town since the 19th century. It makes an easy souvenir to carry home.

Tips for Visiting
- Come in the late afternoon. You’ll see the castle in daylight from Kornmarkt, then again when it’s lit up after dark.
- Take the Bergbahn up to the castle for the view over the market and the Neckar, then come back down for dinner.
- Walk across the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke) for a photo of the old town and castle from the river.
- The market closes on 22 December, earlier than many others. Plan your trip before then.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Between Bismarckplatz and Karlsplatz you’ll cover well over a kilometre of cobbles.
Luggage Storage for the Heidelberg Christmas Market
Heidelberg is a popular day trip from Frankfurt and a stop on many rail itineraries through southern Germany, so a lot of visitors arrive with bags. The Hauptstraße is long, narrow and packed on December evenings, which is no place for a suitcase.
Radical Storage doesn’t have a partner in the Altstadt yet. The closest option is a 24-hour locker at Heidelberg-Pfaffengrund/Wieblingen station, one S-Bahn stop west of the Hauptbahnhof, and there are more lockers around the region, including in nearby Mannheim. Lockers are small, so book ahead if you have a large suitcase. Every bag is protected up to €10,000, cancellation is free and travellers rate the service 4.8/5.
