The Decorated Stall Roofs
Stuttgart is known for what’s on top of the stalls. Traders decorate their roofs by hand with model villages, nativity scenes, moving figures, angels and lights, and the city gives a prize to the best one each year. Walk slowly and look up, especially around Schillerplatz and the Marktplatz, where the stalls stand closest together.
Where to Go at the Stuttgart Christmas Market
- Altes Schloss courtyard: the Renaissance courtyard of the Old Castle hosts the opening ceremony and concerts through Advent.
- Schillerplatz and the Stiftskirche: some of the prettiest stalls, plus concerts and tower musicians at the church.
- Marktplatz: the town hall steps are used for carol singing and choirs, and the town hall offers childcare so parents can shop.
- Karlsplatz: a Finnish Christmas village and an antiques and collectors’ market.
- Schlossplatz: the Kinder-Märchenland children’s area with a small train.
What to Eat and Drink
- Swabian dishes such as Maultaschen (filled pasta pockets) and Schupfnudeln (potato noodles), often fried with sauerkraut.
- Roter and weißer Glühwein, plus hot apple punch for anyone skipping alcohol. Mugs come with a deposit that you get back when you return them.
- Bratwurst, roasted almonds and Lebkuchen.
- Finnish specialities at the Karlsplatz village.
