The Ljubljana Christmas market runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with wooden stalls lining the Ljubljanica river and spilling into the squares of the Old Town. It is part of Festive December (Praznični december), the city’s season of lights, free concerts and street events, which officially lasts until 14 January 2027. The centre is small and car-free, so you can walk the whole market in an evening and still have time for a mulled wine by the river.
Arriving by train or bus with luggage? Leave your bags near Ljubljana station and walk into the Old Town in about 15 minutes.

Where the Stalls Are
The market follows the river. The longest stretch of stalls runs along Breg on one bank and Cankarjevo nabrežje on the other, so you can walk up one side, cross one of the bridges and come back down the other. Prešernov trg, the main square by the Triple Bridge, is where the lights are switched on and where crowds gather in the evening. From there the stalls carry on through Stritarjeva ulica towards the Town Hall, and across to Kongresni trg and Pogačarjev trg by the central market and the cathedral.
Up the hill, Ljubljana Castle has its own festive fair from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 and a nativity scene in the castle chapel, open 09:00–18:00 until 2 February 2027. Take the funicular from Krekov trg if you don’t fancy the climb.

Food and Drink

Eating and drinking is a big part of the Ljubljana Christmas market, and locals come out after work to meet friends at the stands along the river. Look out for:
- Mulled wine (kuhano vino), hot tea and fruit liqueurs.
- Grilled sausages, often served with mustard and bread.
- Žganci, the Slovenian buckwheat or corn dish, and jota, a bean and sauerkraut stew that is good on a cold night.
- Seafood stands, a reminder that the Adriatic coast is only about an hour away.
- Sweets, from roasted nuts to potica, the rolled nut cake served at Slovenian Christmas tables.
How to Get to the Ljubljana Christmas Market

Tips for Visiting
- Come after dark. The lights over the river and the streets are the reason most people visit, and they look best from the Triple Bridge and the Cobblers’ Bridge.
- Weeknights are calmer than Friday and Saturday, when the riverbanks get packed.
- Dress for damp cold. The river keeps the air chilly and foggy evenings are common in December.
- Carry a card and a little cash for the smaller stalls.
- Add a day trip. Lake Bled is about an hour away by bus, and some visitors combine the city with the Zagreb Advent market on the same trip.
Luggage Storage Near the Ljubljana Christmas Market
Ljubljana is often a stop on a longer trip, between Zagreb, Venice, Vienna or Lake Bled, so plenty of visitors arrive with a suitcase on the day they leave. The riverside paths are narrow and busy in the evening, and a big bag makes the market hard work.
