The Innsbruck Christmas market in the Old Town opens on 13 November 2026 in front of the Golden Roof and runs until 23 December. It’s one of four main markets in the city, and the Maria-Theresien-Straße and Hungerburg markets stay open into January 2027. With the Nordkette mountains right above the rooftops, few Advent markets in Europe have a setting like this one.

The four main markets
Old Town market at the Golden Roof
This is the oldest and biggest of Innsbruck’s markets. The stalls fill the lanes of the Altstadt around the Goldenes Dachl, the gilded balcony roof built for Emperor Maximilian I. Look up in the side streets: some balconies are decorated with characters from fairy tales. It’s the busiest market in the evenings, so come in the early afternoon if you want room to browse.
Marktplatz family market
On the riverside square by the Inn, a short walk from the Old Town, this one is aimed at families, with rides and activities for children. Its centrepiece is a 14-metre tree covered in Swarovski crystals.
Maria-Theresien-Straße
The city’s main shopping street has a more modern market with large illuminated crystals down the middle. It opens later than the Old Town market, on 25 November, but stays open until 6 January, so it’s the one to visit if you’re in Innsbruck between Christmas and Epiphany.
Panorama market on the Hungerburg
Take the Hungerburgbahn funicular from Congress station up to the Hungerburg, where a smaller market looks down over the city and the Inn valley. It’s best at dusk, when the lights come on below. The hours are shorter than in town, so plan to go up in the afternoon.
Smaller neighbourhood markets also appear each year, including St. Nikolaus on Hans-Brenner-Platz and the Wiltener Weihnachtszauber in Wilten, both usually from mid-November to 23 December. Hall in Tirol, a short train ride east, has its own Advent market on the Oberer Stadtplatz.
What to eat and drink at the Innsbruck Christmas market
Try Kiachl, a Tyrolean fried dough served either sweet with cranberry jam or savoury with sauerkraut. Zillertaler Krapfen, fried pastries filled with potato and cheese, are filling enough for lunch. Glühwein and fruit punch come in deposit mugs at most stalls.
For gifts, the stalls sell hand-carved wooden figures and nativity scenes, woollens, glass ornaments and local honey and schnapps.
Getting around between the markets
- From Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, walk up Salurner Straße to Maria-Theresien-Straße, then carry on north into the Old Town. It takes about 15 minutes in total.
- Marktplatz is a few minutes’ walk west of the Golden Roof, along the river.
- For the Hungerburg, the funicular leaves from Congress station, next to the Hofburg.
- Innsbruck is on the main rail line between Munich, Verona and Vienna, so it works well as a stop on a longer trip.
December nights in Innsbruck are often below freezing, and it’s colder still on the Hungerburg. Wear warm boots and bring gloves.
