The Bratislava Christmas market opens on Thursday 26 November 2026 and runs until 3 January 2027 on Main Square (Hlavné námestie) and Hviezdoslav Square in the Old Town. Stalls are open every day from 10:00 to 22:00, except 24 and 25 December, and entry is free.

Where the stalls are
Main Square is the centre of it all, with the Old Town Hall on one side and the biggest cluster of food and gift stalls. Next to it, Primatial Square holds the Christmas Forest: trees decorated by children from local primary, art and special-needs schools. From 15 December those trees are given to families and charities.
Hviezdoslav Square, the long tree-lined square towards the river and the Slovak National Theatre, has the second set of stalls. The two squares are about five minutes apart on foot, through the lanes of the Old Town.
Main Square also has a Friendly Zone, a covered area that is wheelchair accessible, set up for families, older visitors and anyone who wants a quieter corner.
Food and drink at the Bratislava Christmas market
Slovak food is the reason many people come. Look for kapustnica, the sauerkraut soup Slovaks eat at Christmas, and lokše, thin potato pancakes filled with duck fat, poppy seeds or jam. Cigánska pečienka is a grilled pork sandwich with mustard and onion, and langoš is fried dough topped with garlic, cheese and sour cream. The stalls also do international dishes like bao and gyoza, plus vegetarian and vegan options.
To drink, there’s varené víno (mulled wine), medovina (mead), grog, hot fruit wine and beer, and non-alcoholic choices for kids and drivers. Prices are lower than in Vienna or Prague.
What else to do in Bratislava in December
- Ride the Christmas tram. The city transport company runs a decorated tram in Advent and will publish its 2026 timetable closer to the date.
- Walk up to Bratislava Castle for views over the Danube and the Old Town lights.
- Cross the river on the bridge with the UFO tower for a different view of the city.
- Take the train to Vienna, about an hour away, and see a second set of markets on the same trip.
Getting there
From Bratislava hlavná stanica (the main station) it’s about 20 minutes on foot to Main Square, mostly downhill. Trams and buses cover the same route in a few minutes. Buses from Vienna Airport stop in Bratislava too. The Old Town itself is pedestrian, so you’ll walk between the squares anyway.
