Discovering the beauty of Navona Square
Representing Rome’s most impressive architecture, Piazza Navona is a beautiful and charming square in the Eternal City. This slightly oval-shaped district on the map of Rome has deep historical connections that date back to 80 AD and further.
Like Trastevere, Navona square is on every tourist’s go-to list because of its lively streets full of local artists and ancient architecture. It is home to some grand churches and noteworthy fountains that reveal the stories of the Renaissance era.
The ancient Romans used this area as a showground for enjoying games and sports, which is why it is also known as the Stadium of Domitian. Later on, the name Navona was derived from a Greek word called “agones" meaning “games."
What to do in Navona Sqaure
If you intend to visit this lovely area of Rome, we suggest you start with the three incredible fountains of Navona Square. The first one is La Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of Four Rivers), right in the center of the square and ti's also the main landmark of Navona. To make the most of your trip, visit Piazza Navona at night and experience the true Roman lifestyle.
On the western end of the square, right next to La Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, you can visit the inside of the Church of Sant’Angese. After taking some memorable photos there, head over to Fontana del Moro and Fontana di Nettuno to admire the astonishing sculptures of these fountains.
There is an 18th-century palace known as Palazzo Braschi in the southern part of the Navona square, which is now a Roman history museum. Entry is free if you have a Roma Pass or Rome card, otherwise, the ticket to the museum is €7–10.
