Checkpoint Charlie got its name from the NATO phonetic alphabet, meaning it was the third checkpoint opened by the Allies around Berlin. The spot symbolises the former border crossing, the Cold War and the partition of Berlin. It soon became the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin.
