Checkpoint Charlie got its name from the NATO phonetic alphabet, meaning it was the third checkpoint opened by the Allies around Berlin. The spot symbolises the former border crossing, the Cold War and the partition of Berlin. It soon became the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin.
Throughout the Cold War, Checkpoint Charlie became the scene for attempted escapes from East Berlin. After it closed down, it became the setting for many thriller and spy novels and movies, most famously, James Bond.
When you visit, you can learn more about the history of this fascinating sight at the nearby Checkpoint Charlie Museum. You will also be close to other Berlin sights, including the Victory Column and Potsdamer Platz.
