The Valkenburg Christmas market is held underground. From 13 November to 30 December 2026, stalls fill the marl galleries of two caves in Valkenburg aan de Geul, the Gemeentegrot under the Cauberg hill and the Fluweelengrot beneath the castle ruin. Above ground, the town runs as Kerststad Valkenburg (Christmas Town Valkenburg) until 3 January 2027, with a light parade, street theatre and a Santa’s village. Valkenburg sits in South Limburg, between Maastricht and Aachen, and the caves need a timed ticket booked in advance.

The Valkenburg Christmas Market in the Caves
Both caves are old marl quarries, cut into the soft limestone over centuries, and they stay at a steady cool temperature whatever the weather is doing outside. You walk through the passages past stalls selling decorations, gifts and food, so it feels more like a long winding route than a market square. Each cave is a separate attraction with its own ticket.
Gemeentegrot
The Municipal Cave runs deep into the Cauberg and is the bigger of the two. It’s billed as the oldest and largest underground Christmas market in Europe, and its wide galleries make it the easier choice with a pushchair or wheelchair.
Fluweelengrot
The Velvet Cave lies under the ruins of Valkenburg Castle. Its passages are narrower, and along the way you pass an underground chapel carved by hand and drawings on the sandstone walls left by people who sheltered or worked here. If you only have time for one cave and want atmosphere over size, pick this one.
Tickets and Booking
Cave tickets are sold online by date and time slot through the ticket shop on the official Kerststad Valkenburg website, and a booking can’t be changed once it’s made. Weekend slots go first, so book as soon as you know your dates. If you want to see both caves, leave about an hour and a half for each, plus time to walk between them across town.
The same shop sells an Arriva return train ticket for €5, a Park & Train ticket for €17.50 covering up to five people, and parking tickets for the Cauberg and Valkenier car parks.
The Christmas Parade and Above-Ground Events
The Landal Christmas Parade, a procession of lit-up floats through the town centre, was voted Best Christmas Parade in Europe in 2025 and is free to watch. It usually runs on set evenings each week during the season, so check the schedule on the official site and arrive early for a spot along the route.
Other parts of Christmas Town include street theatre, Santa’s Village, Christmas in MergelRijk, the cable car, the Route d’Amuse food trail and nativity walks (Kribkeswandelingen). The Visit Zuid-Limburg Experience at Theodoor Dorrenplein 5 is a good first stop for maps and tips.

Food and Drink
- Glühwein and hot chocolate from the stalls in the caves and in town.
- Oliebollen and poffertjes, the Dutch winter doughnuts and mini pancakes.
- Limburgse vlaai, the fruit tart South Limburg is known for, in the cafés around the centre.
- A sit-down dinner in town: the organisers recommend reserving a table on busy days.

Tips for Visiting
- Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends are very busy and the cave passages get crowded.
- Bring a warm layer for the caves. It’s cool and damp underground, even if it’s mild outside.
- Wear shoes with grip. Cave floors can be uneven and slippery.
- Pair the trip with Aachen’s or Maastricht’s own markets, both a short train ride away.
- Don’t bring a suitcase into the caves. The passages are narrow and busy.
