The Strasbourg Christmas market opens on Friday 27 November 2026 and runs until Christmas Eve, 24 December. Locals call it the Christkindelsmärik, and it dates back to 1570, which makes it one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe. Today it’s spread over about ten squares on the Grande Île, the island that forms the old centre, with more than 300 wooden chalets. Below you’ll find the 2026 dates, where each market is, what to eat and drink, and how to get around.

The markets and where to find them
Everything is on or next to the Grande Île, so you can walk between all the squares. These are the markets the city lists for 2026:
- Christkindelsmärik on Place Broglie, the original and biggest market.
- Au pied du Grand Sapin on Place Kléber, around the great Christmas tree.
- Around the cathedral, on Place de la Cathédrale and Place du Château.
- La Petite France, on Place Benjamin Zix and Place Saint-Thomas.
- The OFF market on Place Grimmeissen, with fair-trade and alternative stalls.
If you only have one evening, start at Place Broglie, walk to the cathedral for the lit-up facade, then head to Place Kléber for the tree. Petite France is quieter and prettiest after dark, with the half-timbered houses along the canals.
Food and drink at the Strasbourg Christmas market

Alsace mixes French and German food traditions, and the market shows it. Vin chaud here is often made with Alsatian white wine, so it tastes lighter than the usual red Glühwein. Try a bretzel, a tarte flambée (thin flatbread with crème fraîche, onions and bacon), and bredele, the small Christmas biscuits every Alsatian family bakes in December. Pain d’épices, a spiced honey bread, makes an easy gift to bring home. The Quai des Délices market is the best stop if food is your main reason to come.
Getting to the Strasbourg Christmas market
Strasbourg’s main station is about 15 minutes’ walk from Place Kléber. Trams A and D run from the station (Gare Centrale) to Homme de Fer, right next to Place Kléber. TGV trains from Paris take around 1 hour 50 minutes, and regional trains from Colmar take about half an hour, so a combined Alsace trip is easy. Driving into the centre during the market is hard work. Traffic is restricted on the Grande Île, so use the park-and-ride car parks on the edge of the city and take the tram in.
Tips for your visit
- Weekends in December are very crowded. A weekday morning gives you room to browse.
- Book accommodation early. The Grande Île fills up first, but hotels near the station or in the Neustadt are within walking distance.
- Expect security checks at the entry points to the Grande Île, as in past years, and keep bags small.
- Dress for cold, damp weather. December temperatures often sit around freezing.
