What happens at Réveillon in Copacabana

The party runs along the whole 4 km of Copacabana. In the last edition (31 December 2025) the city set up 13 stages across Rio, three of them in Copacabana and Leme, with more than 70 acts. The main stage, Palco Rio, stood in front of the Copacabana Palace, and a samba stage was near Rua República do Peru. Leme had a gospel stage. Expect a similar layout in 2026, with music starting in the evening and carrying on well after midnight.

At midnight the fireworks start from barges lined up off the beach. The last show used a record 19 barges and was followed by more than 1,000 drones drawing shapes in the sky. The 2026 numbers haven’t been released, so take these as a guide to the scale, not a promise.

Rio New Year’s Eve traditions

  • Wear white. It stands for peace and a fresh start, and you’ll stand out if you don’t. Some people add a colour for what they want in the new year, like yellow for money or red for love.
  • Jump seven waves after midnight, making a wish with each one. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes.
  • Offer white flowers to Iemanjá, the sea goddess in Afro-Brazilian religion. Many people throw them into the water during the evening.
  • Eat lentils or pomegranate seeds for luck. Many families do this at dinner before heading to the beach.

Where to watch the fireworks

The fireworks are visible along the whole Copacabana waterfront, so you don’t need to be at a main stage. Leme, at the north end, is a bit calmer and good for families. If you’d rather skip the crowd, many beachfront hotels, rooftop bars and boats sell private Réveillon packages. They need booking and are paid separately from the public event, and the best ones sell out well before December.

Tips for the night

  • Carry as little as possible. Pickpocketing is a real risk in big crowds, so keep your phone on a strap or in a front pocket and leave valuables at the hotel.
  • It’s summer, and it can be hot or rainy. Bring water, sunscreen if you arrive during the day and a rain poncho rather than an umbrella.
  • Wear light shoes you don’t mind getting sandy, and agree on a meeting point with your group, since phone signal can drop around midnight.
  • If you can, book a place to stay within walking distance of Copacabana. Getting home after the fireworks is slow.

Getting to Copacabana on New Year’s Eve

Cars are blocked from Copacabana on the night, so the metro is the best way in and out. In the last edition it ran through the night from the evening of 31 December, and you had to buy special tickets in advance. The city publishes the 2026 transport plan, with metro rules and road closures, in late December. Taxis and ride apps are very hard to find near the beach after midnight.
