The Estádio da Luz is Benfica’s 65,000-seat home in north-west Lisbon, the biggest stadium in Portugal and the venue for two Champions League finals. It’s 20 minutes from the centre on the blue metro line, which is why so many visitors squeeze a match, the Benfica Museum or the stadium tour into a Lisbon trip with their luggage in tow. The rules at the gate follow the Portuguese league standard: every bag searched, large backpacks and luggage refused, no glass, cans or outside alcohol, and no cloakroom or lockers at the stadium. This guide covers the bag rules and prohibited items, capacity, the museum and tour, how to get there by metro, parking and where to store luggage near the Estádio da Luz.
Visiting with luggage? Store your bags nine minutes from the stadium, open until midnight.

Estádio da Luz Bag Rules and Prohibited Items
Benfica don’t publish a centimetre bag gauge; the stadium regulations and the Portuguese league’s security rules give stewards the call. Handbags, belt bags and small daypacks go through after a search at the outer gates. Suitcases, cabin cases and large backpacks are turned away, and with no cloakroom you’d have to leave the queue to find somewhere for them.
| Category | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Bags | Large backpacks, luggage, prams and bulky items |
| Drinks and food | Glass, cans, bottles with caps, outside alcohol |
| Tech | Professional cameras and video equipment, drones, laser pointers, selfie sticks |
| Display | Unauthorised banners and flags, poles, anything with offensive or political messages |
| Dangerous | Flares, smoke bombs, fireworks, weapons, drugs, anything throwable |
Tickets are digital in the Benfica app and ID can be checked against the name. For Champions League nights the European rules apply and searches are stricter; arrive two hours before a 20:00 kick-off.
Benfica Museum and Stadium Tour
The Museu Benfica – Cosme Damião is one of the best club museums in Europe, 29 themed areas covering the club’s history, Eusébio and the trophies, and the stadium tour (about 30 minutes) adds the dressing rooms, the tunnel, the dugouts and the presidential box.

Colégio Militar/Luz station sits right between the stadium and the Colombo shopping centre and is the obvious exit after a match, with a 20–30 minute queue on big nights. Alto dos Moinhos, one stop back towards the centre and a 10-minute walk, is usually faster. Evening games end around 22:30 and the metro runs until 1:00.
Parking and Matchday Tips
- Parking: the stadium car parks and the Colombo centre’s multi-storey next door are the options; both fill two hours before kick-off and empty slowly. Metro is easier.
- Arrive early for big games (Sporting, Porto, Champions League): searches and app checks at the outer ring slow the queues.
- Eat at Colombo. The shopping centre’s food court is the practical pre-match option; it’s open late and sits by the metro.
- The eagle. Benfica’s live eagle, Vitória, flies around the stadium before kick-off; be in your seat 15 minutes early to see it.
- Cashless kiosks inside.
