The Brasov Christmas market fills Piața Sfatului, the Council Square in the middle of the old town, from the end of November until early January. For 2026 the city calendar lists 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, though Brașov City Hall hadn’t published the full programme yet in late October. Expect wooden stalls run mostly by local craftspeople, a tall lit tree in front of the Council House, and the Black Church and Tâmpa mountain as a backdrop. Entry is free and you pay in Romanian lei.
Coming in by train for the day? Leave your bags near Piața Sfatului and see the old town without a suitcase.

What the Brasov Christmas Market Is Like
Piața Sfatului is one of the prettiest squares in Romania, lined with pastel Saxon merchant houses and the old Council House in the middle. In December the stalls ring the square, the big tree goes up next to the Council House, and the Hollywood-style BRAȘOV sign on Tâmpa looks down on it all. The market is smaller than the big ones in Vienna or Budapest, which makes it easy to enjoy in an evening.
The city gives priority to artisans from Brașov and the surrounding county. In 2025 they held more than 70% of the spaces, with extra points for traditional handmade techniques. So you’ll find painted eggs, woodwork, wool, ceramics and embroidered blouses next to the usual decorations.
Events Through December
The 2026 programme isn’t out yet. In 2025 the season looked like this, and the city usually keeps the same pattern:
- Opening night with the lights and tree switched on in Piața Sfatului.
- A folklore show on 1 December, Romania’s National Day.
- Saint Nicholas performances around 5 and 6 December.
- Christmas shows on 22 and 23 December.
- A free New Year’s Eve concert in Piața Sfatului on 31 December.

Food and Drink
- Kürtőskalács, the chimney cake rolled in sugar, cinnamon or walnuts. It comes from the Hungarian and Saxon side of Transylvania and you’ll smell it across the square.
- Sarmale, cabbage rolls with polenta and sour cream, and grilled mici.
- Vin fiert (mulled wine) and hot țuică, the local plum brandy.
- Cozonac, the sweet Christmas bread, to take home.
Getting to the Brasov Christmas Market
| From | How | Time |

| Brașov railway station | Local bus or taxi to the old town | About 15 min |

Tips for Visiting
- Go after dark, when the square and Strada Republicii are lit up.
- Pair the market with the Black Church, Rope Street (one of the narrowest streets in Europe) and the cable car up Tâmpa if the weather is clear.
- Weekends get busy with visitors from Bucharest. Come midweek if you can.
- Make it a two-day trip and add Bran Castle, Râșnov fortress or a ski day in Poiana Brașov.
Luggage Storage in Brașov
Brașov is often a day stop between Bucharest and the rest of Transylvania, so plenty of people arrive with bags and a train to catch later. The old town’s cobbles and the walk up to the Black Church are much nicer without them.
