The Medieval Market
The medieval part fills the lanes of the old town. Blacksmiths, wood turners, leather workers, potters and coppersmiths work at their stalls, and you can buy mead, honey and hand-dipped candles. Fire performers, jugglers, acrobats and minstrels perform several times a day on stages at the Rathausplatz, the Hafenmarkt and the Zwergenland on the Kleiner Markt. Some hands-on activities, such as candle dipping and bread baking, cost extra.
The 2026 line-up includes the medieval band Argentum through most of the season, the Schmierenkomödianten comedy troupe from 28 November to 9 December, and the strongman acrobats Eisenhans from 15 to 17 December. Check the official page for the daily schedule.
The Esslingen Christmas Market Stalls
Next to the medieval market is a traditional Christmas market with more than 80 stalls, a nostalgic carousel and a candle workshop. The Weihnachtsinsel at the Postmichelbrunnen has a living nativity scene. On Advent weekends, more than 30 craftspeople sell their work at a separate Advent market in Ritterstraße.

For Kids
The Märchenzelt, a storytelling tent, is free and you don’t need to register. In 2026 the storytellers are Naceur Charles Aceval (ages 8 and up, 27 to 29 November), Yussuf Ibrahim (ages 6 and up, 30 November to 4 December) and Pirolina (all ages, 5 to 22 December). The Zwergenland stage on the Kleiner Markt is aimed at younger children too.
What to Eat and Drink
The medieval stalls sell mead, honey wine and bread from wood-fired ovens alongside the usual Glühwein. In the Christmas market section you’ll find Swabian food such as Maultaschen and Schupfnudeln, plus bratwurst, roasted almonds and gingerbread.

Tips for Visiting the Esslingen Christmas Market
- Stay until dark for the fire shows, which are the highlight of the medieval market.
- Visit on a weekday if you can. Advent Saturdays are crowded, and the lanes are narrow.
- Wear shoes with grip. The old town streets are cobbled and can be slippery.
- The market ends on 22 December, so don’t plan a visit for Christmas week.
