The Zagreb Christmas market, better known as Advent in Zagreb (Advent u Zagrebu), runs from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, with a warm-up programme from 25 November. Instead of one big square, Zagreb spreads its Advent across the city centre: stalls and a giant tree on Ban Jelačić Square, lights and music in Zrinjevac park, food stands and views in the Upper Town, and an ice rink in front of the main station. Most of it is walkable in an evening, and the food is a big part of why people come.
Arriving by train with luggage? Leave your bags near Zagreb Central Station and start at the ice park across the road.

Where to Go: The Main Advent Locations
The city has confirmed Ban Jelačić Square, European Square, Eugen Kvaternik Square, Gradec Plateau and both sides of the Strossmayer Promenade as Advent locations for 2026, with the parks at Zrinjevac (Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square), Strossmayer Square and King Tomislav Square also taking part. Several outer districts, from Trešnjevka to Sesvete, run their own smaller markets.
- Ban Jelačić Square is the main square, with the big Christmas tree, a winter village of food and drink stalls and the Advent candles by the Manduševac fountain.
- Zrinjevac, the tree-lined park in the Lower Town, is known for its lights, its bandstand concerts and souvenir stalls.
- Gradec and the Strossmayer Promenade in the Upper Town have food, warm drinks and live music, with views over the rooftops. Take the funicular from Tomićeva street to save the climb.
- Strossmayer Square hosts Fuliranje, a food-stall market that gets busy in the evenings and at weekends.
- King Tomislav Square, right outside the Central Station, has the open-air ice park with skating and food huts.
A good route is to start at the ice park by the station, walk north through Zrinjevac and the Lower Town parks to Ban Jelačić Square, then ride the funicular up to Gradec for the views and finish with a drink on the Strossmayer Promenade.

Food and Drink at the Zagreb Christmas Market
Locals treat Advent as a reason to meet friends outdoors after work, so the food stalls are the heart of the Zagreb Christmas market. Things to try:
- Fritule, small fried doughnut balls dusted with sugar.
- Mulled wine (kuhano vino), in red or white.
- Grilled sausages, the staple at Fuliranje.
- Sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls) for something more filling.
- Christmas biscuits and cakes such as vanilin kiflice, paprenjaci and makovnjača (poppy seed roll).
Some stalls serve drinks in branded mugs with a small refundable deposit, so keep the mug or hand it back for your money.

Tips for Visiting
- Go on a weeknight if you can. Friday and Saturday evenings are packed, particularly at Fuliranje and on the Upper Town promenade.
- Walk between the locations in the evening, when the lights are on. The distances are short.
- Dress warmly. December evenings in Zagreb are cold and damp.
- Combine the trip with Ljubljana, which holds its own Christmas market at the same time and is about two and a half hours away.
- Don’t bring your suitcase to the market. The Upper Town streets are steep and cobbled, and the funicular is small.
