Arezzo Christmas Market 2026: Tyrolean Village, Dates & Tips

Piazza Grande in Arezzo, home of the Tyrolean Christmas village

The Arezzo Christmas market is the Tyrolean village (Villaggio Tirolese) that fills Piazza Grande every winter, and in 2026 it is the centrepiece of the Città del Natale programme, which runs from 14 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Wooden chalets sell crafts, decorations and food from the Alps, Austria and Germany on one of the most photographed squares in Tuscany. Around it the city adds an ice rink, a Santa’s house in the Medici fortress, light shows and several smaller markets, and the whole thing is about an hour from Florence by train.

Coming for the day with a suitcase? Leave your bags near Arezzo station and walk up to the old town without them.

The Tyrolean Village in Piazza Grande

Piazza Grande is the sloping medieval square at the top of the old town, framed by Vasari’s Loggia on the upper side, the Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici and the stone apse of the Pieve di Santa Maria. For the Christmas season it fills with Alpine-style wooden huts selling handmade decorations, wooden toys, wool, candles and food, much of it brought down from South Tyrol, Austria and Germany. Local press reports 2026 as the tenth edition of the Tyrolean village.

The slope is part of the charm: walk to the top by the Loggia and you look down over the roofs of the huts to the towers and houses on the lower side. Come after dark, when the square is lit up. Listings for 2026 also mention an evening light show on the square, and the Brick House Art exhibition, three floors of brick-built art and workshops, is part of the programme.

Beyond the Arezzo Christmas Market: Città del Natale

Piazza Grande is the best-known stop, but the Città del Natale spreads across the old town. The 2026 programme includes:

  • Natale in Fortezza at the Fortezza Medicea, a Christmas village of more than 10,000 square metres with shows and light displays, 14 November to 6 January.
  • The Casa di Babbo Natale (Santa’s house), open from 15 November to 24 December.
  • An ice rink, the Grande Mercatino di Natale and smaller markets in Piazza San Jacopo and Piazza Risorgimento.
  • A Christmas village in Parco Il Prato, the park between the cathedral and the fortress, which the organisers say will host Eurochocolate.
  • The Arezzo Christmas Bus Tour, a sightseeing bus with an audio guide.

Arezzo is also worth a visit for its art. Piero della Francesca’s True Cross fresco cycle is in the Basilica di San Francesco, and Cimabue’s Crucifix hangs in San Domenico, both a short walk from the markets.

Food and Drink

The huts in Piazza Grande lean Alpine, so expect strudel, speck, sausages, pretzels, mulled wine (vin brulé) and beer rather than Tuscan food. For a proper sit-down lunch or dinner, the trattorias in the streets around the square and along Corso Italia serve Tuscan dishes, and they fill up fast on market weekends, so book ahead on a Saturday. Hot chocolate is easy to find, and the chocolate stands in Il Prato are worth a look if Eurochocolate goes ahead there as planned.

The walk from the station is uphill all the way, which is fine with a small backpack and hard work with a wheeled case on the stone streets. Weekends are by far the busiest time, particularly the Espresso Natale Sundays. A weekday visit in late November or early December is calmer, as long as you check which parts are open that day.

Tips for Visiting

  • Arrive mid-afternoon, see the churches and museums in daylight, then stay for the lights in Piazza Grande after dark.
  • Wear shoes with grip. The square slopes and the stones get slippery when it rains.
  • Carry a little cash for the smaller craft stalls, although most take cards.
  • Check the official programme for the day you plan to visit, because opening days differ between attractions.
  • Leave big bags behind. The old town streets are narrow and steep, and the square gets crowded on Saturday evenings.
