The Basel Christmas market runs from 26 November to 23 December 2026 on two squares in the old town, Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, with about 150 wooden chalets between them. It’s smaller and calmer than the big German markets, and the setting is lovely, especially the square in front of the red sandstone Münster. Basel sits right on the borders with France and Germany, so it’s easy to combine with Colmar or Strasbourg. Here are the 2026 dates and hours, what to see, what to eat and how to get there.

The two market squares
Barfüsserplatz
The bigger and busier of the two squares, around the Barfüsserkirche. Its landmark is a 13-metre Christmas pyramid, the usual meeting point for a mug of mulled wine. Most of the food stalls are here too, along with chalets selling decorations, crafts and gifts.
Münsterplatz
A few minutes’ walk uphill, the square in front of Basel Minster has a decorated Christmas tree and a fairytale forest with activities for children. It feels quieter than Barfüsserplatz and is the prettier of the two after dark. On weekday evenings the Münster tower staircase is lit up, and you can climb it for a view over the old town.
More to see in Basel at Christmas
- The new Basler Wienachtsdorf, a Christmas village of about 40 huts on Theaterplatz, open from 26 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with later evening hours than the main market.
- The Adväntsgass on Rheingasse in Kleinbasel, a street of food and drink stalls across the river.
- The Alphütte, an alpine-style hut on Claraplatz.
- The public wish book in the courtyard of the red Rathaus (town hall), where anyone can write a Christmas wish.
Food and drink at the Basel Christmas market

Basler Läckerli, the city’s spiced honey biscuits with candied peel, are the local speciality and a good gift to take home. At the stalls you’ll also find Swiss favourites like raclette and grilled sausages, plus roasted almonds, waffles and Glühwein. Prices are in Swiss francs and are higher than at German markets, so budget a little more for food and drinks.
Getting to the Basel Christmas market
From Basel SBB, the main station, trams run to Barfüsserplatz in a few minutes, or you can walk there in about 15 minutes. Trains from Germany also stop at Basel Badischer Bahnhof in Kleinbasel, across the river. Buses connect EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg with Basel SBB. If you’re coming from Alsace, trains from Colmar take under an hour, which makes a two-country market trip easy.
Tips for your visit
- Come in the early evening when the lights are on. Weekdays are calmer than Saturdays.
- Many stalls take cards, but carry a few Swiss francs for the smaller ones.
- On 23 December, the last day, Münsterplatz closes at 18:00.
- If you’re staying in a Basel hotel, ask for the BaselCard, which includes free public transport.
