Le Palais de l’Ile

The Palais de l’Île, or Annecy’s old prisons, has been classified as a historic monument since 1900 and has a rich and varied history. Originally a fortified house in the 12th century, it served as a prison, courthouse, and administrative center. It was also a monetary workshop and later became the Palais de Justice de l’Île. Despite considerations for demolition, it survived and was used for various purposes, including an old people’s home, a drawing school, a gymnasium, and lodgings. Today, it stands as a remarkable and original monument from the Middle Ages, situated on a natural rocky island.

A 15-minute walk takes you from the Annecy Train Station to the Palais de l’Île. Simply exit the station and head towards the town center, following the signs for the Old Town (Vieille Ville). The medieval-style fortified house is located in the heart of the old town, near the Thiou River.
