Derby Day 2026
Saturday 31 October opens the carnival with the Victoria Derby. The signature look is black and white, and the official flower is the blue cornflower. It’s the day for people who love the racing itself as much as the party.
Melbourne Cup Day 2026
Tuesday 3 November is the main event. Expect vivid colours, bold prints and statement hats (official flower: yellow rose). The VRC has lined up Robbie Williams for a pre-Cup performance in the Mounting Yard and a full set on The Elms Live Stage after the last race, with PNAU and CYRIL also playing during the day. The trophy ceremony kicks off at 2:23pm in the Mounting Yard ahead of the race.
Oaks Day 2026
Thursday 5 November is Crown Oaks Day, traditionally the most glamorous day of the week. Think soft pastels, lace, florals and delicate millinery (official flower: pink rose). It’s also the cheapest day to get in.
Stakes Day 2026
Saturday 7 November closes the carnival with TAB Champions Stakes Day. It has a relaxed garden-party feel and is the most family-friendly day, with kids encouraged to dress up (official flower: red rose).
Melbourne Cup tickets 2026: what they cost
Tickets are sold only through the Victoria Racing Club. General admission gets you onto the Front Lawn, The Park, the Hill Stand and the TAB Saintly Place Sports Bar, with the big screens and the Fashions on the Field runway on the Front Lawn. If you want a guaranteed seat or a table, you’ll pay a lot more.
| Cup Day ticket | Price (per person) |
|---|---|
| General Admission (adult) | $120 |
| Two Day Pass (Cup Day + Oaks Day) | $150 |
| Lawn Stand Reserved Seat | from $350 |
| Hill Stand Reserved Seat | from $575 |
| Birdcage Reserved | $620 |
| Smirnoff Sky Deck | $745 |
| Shared hospitality (The Dress Circle to Marmont in the Birdcage) | $245–$2,195 |
| Children under 12 | Free with an adult ticket holder |
Prices listed on vrc.com.au in October 2026. Some packages (Club Lawn Reserved, Carlton Draught Pavilion) had already sold out at the time of writing, so book early if you want anything beyond GA. Public parking at Flemington is free for race day ticket holders, but the train is far easier (see below).
Melbourne Cup dress code: what to wear
Here’s the part that surprises first-timers: there is no official dress code for general admission. The VRC simply “encourages racegoers to dress suitably”, and there are no rules for kids in the public areas. In practice, almost everyone dresses up, so a dress and a fascinator or a suit and tie will help you blend in, but you won’t be turned away in a nice shirt and chinos.
The Members’ Enclosure (The Club Stand, The Grandstand, Members Lawn, Members Betting Ring and the Birdcage) is a different story. Men and boys 12+ need a suit or tailored pants, a blazer or sports coat, a collared shirt, a tie or bow tie and dress shoes. Women are expected to wear racewear of a “suitable standard”. On the banned list: denim of any kind, sports shoes and runners, shorts above the knee, short jumpsuits and playsuits, midriff-baring tops, leggings worn as pants, ripped clothing, and casual jackets like parkas, windbreakers and denim jackets. Security can and does refuse entry.
Practical tips whichever area you’re in: Flemington is a huge, mostly outdoor course, so bring comfortable shoes (or flats to change into), sunscreen and a layer for the evening. Early November in Melbourne can swing from 15°C and rain to 30°C and sun in the same week.
Flemington bag policy: what you can bring in
Security runs bag checks at every entry point, so pack light and know the rules before you queue. According to the VRC’s conditions of entry:
- No alcohol can be brought through the turnstiles. Drinks are sold at bars and dining outlets across the course.
- No glass or open beverage containers.
- BYO food is allowed in general admission areas (picnics on the lawn are a Cup Day tradition), but not in the Club Stand, Atrium Dining or The Peak.
- No large umbrellas, market or beach umbrellas, gazebos or portable shade structures. Folding fabric chairs and stools are fine; other chairs are not.
- No dangerous items such as knives.
- Cloakrooms are free during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, in both the public and members’ areas, for coats, small bags and hats.
- Re-entry is allowed: scan your ticket at the turnstiles on the way out and you can come back in.
One thing the on-course cloakroom is not built for is luggage. If you’re arriving from the airport, checking out of your hotel that morning or heading to a regional race-day party afterwards, drop your suitcase at a luggage storage point near Flemington Racecourse or in the CBD before you get on the train.
How to get to Flemington Racecourse
Train to Flemington Racecourse station
The train is the way to go. Flemington Racecourse has its own station that only opens on race days, and the Train Gate drops you straight onto the course. On Cup Day 2026, Metro runs express services from Flinders Street (Platform 9) direct to Flemington from 8:44am to 1:23pm; services from 1:35pm to 2:44pm stop at Southern Cross and North Melbourne first. From Southern Cross, trains run from 8:52am to 1:33pm. Heading home, trains leave Flemington Racecourse from 1:36pm until the last train at 8:59pm, stopping at North Melbourne and Southern Cross. Plan on big queues straight after the Cup; waiting for the evening concert thins them out.
Tram, bus, rideshare and parking
| Option | Details |
|---|---|
| Tram | Route 57 from Elizabeth St/Flinders St to Flemington Drive (Stop 30), outside the Main Gate. No low-floor trams on this route |
| Bus | Route 472 (Williamstown/Footscray/Moonee Ponds) to Fisher Parade for The Elms Gate; Route 404 (Footscray/Moonee Ponds) to Smithfield Road for the Stables Drive entrance |
| Rideshare | Drop-off at the Main Gate. DiDi is the VRC’s official rideshare partner |
| Taxi | Main Rank via Stables Drive off Smithfield Drive |
| Car | Free public parking for race day ticket holders; enter via Flemington Drive off Epsom Road |
| Non-race days | About 10 minutes’ walk from Newmarket station (Craigieburn line) |
Flemington is around 6 km north-west of the CBD, so if you’re staying in the city centre, Southbank or Docklands you’re never more than 20–30 minutes from the gates. Check the VRC’s transport page and Transport Victoria for any changes on the day.
Is Melbourne Cup Day a public holiday?
Yes. Tuesday 3 November 2026 is a public holiday across Victoria, unless a non-metropolitan council has arranged an alternative local holiday. Banks, government offices and many businesses close, and plenty of Melburnians take the Monday off too to make it a four-day weekend. For visitors that means two things: the city is in full party mode (pubs, rooftop bars and restaurants run Cup Day lunches and sweeps from midday), and some shops, cafes and attractions run reduced hours. Book restaurants in advance and check opening times before you set out.
Also note that the Cup is run at 3pm AEDT (Melbourne is on daylight saving time in November), which is 2pm in Queensland, 2:30pm in South Australia, noon in Perth and 5pm in New Zealand.
Where to watch the Melbourne Cup if you don’t have a ticket
You don’t need to be at Flemington to feel the Cup. Almost every pub, rooftop bar and function venue in the city runs a Cup Day event with sweeps, lunch packages and the race on the big screen, and the whole country stops for three minutes at 3pm. The best venues sell out weeks ahead, so if you want a table with a view, book now.
Luggage storage in Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup
Cup Day is the busiest travel day of Melbourne’s spring, and the one day you really don’t want to be carrying a suitcase: security searches every bag, the cloakroom is for coats and hats rather than luggage, and the train platforms are packed before and after the race. Radical Storage solves that. You book online in a minute, drop your bags at a verified local business (shops, cafes and hotels) in the CBD, near Southern Cross Station or close to Flemington, and collect them whenever you’re done.
- Every bag is covered by up to €10,000 protection
- Free cancellation if your plans change
- Rated 4.8/5 by travellers, with 16,500+ locations in 2,300+ cities worldwide
