Senate Square and the Old-Time Carousel
Senate Square is Helsinki’s grandest public space, with the cathedral at the top of its wide steps and the Government Palace and University of Helsinki on either side. The market fills the square with wooden huts and puts an old-fashioned carousel in the middle, which is the favourite spot for families and photos.

The rule at Tuomaan markkinat is that sellers make what they sell, so you’ll find more original craft here than at many bigger markets. Look for wool socks and mittens, felted and wooden decorations, ceramics, candles, jewellery and Finnish design pieces. Food stalls sell rye bread, cheeses, smoked fish, jams and sweets to take home.
