The Great Christmas Market at Quartier des Spectacles
Place des Festivals is the big open square in Montreal’s entertainment district, the same space that hosts the summer jazz festival, and in winter it turns into a village of lit chalets. The exhibitors are local and regional artisans and food producers from Quebec, so this is a good place to buy maple products, handmade decorations, knitwear and small gifts from the province.
The free program runs through the season, with musical and theatrical shows, and the square is surrounded by concert halls, so it’s easy to pair the market with a show at Place des Arts.
Opening Hours
| Period | Days | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| November 13 – December 13 | Wednesday to Friday | 3 p.m. – 10 p.m. |

The official schedule lists no Monday or Tuesday openings before mid-December, so plan a Wednesday to Sunday visit if you’re coming in November or early December. Weekday evenings are quieter than Saturdays.

Village de Noël de Montréal
The Village de Noël de Montréal is a separate Christmas market at 3325 Rue Saint-Ambroise, in the Lachine Canal and Little Burgundy area southwest of downtown. It runs from November 26 to December 24, 2026, admission is free, and the nearest metro is Lionel-Groulx. Opening hours aren’t published in the listings yet, so check before you go.
Food, Drinks and Gifts
Mulled wine (vin chaud) is the drink of the season here, and the food stands lean on Quebec produce. Look for maple treats, hot snacks and sweets from regional producers, and leave room for a warm drink between chalets. For gifts, the Quebec-made crafts and food products travel well, though maple syrup goes in checked luggage if you’re flying with a carry-on only.
How to Get to the Montreal Christmas Market
| From | How | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Metro | Green line to Place-des-Arts or Saint-Laurent | A few minutes’ walk |
| Bus | Lines 15, 55, 80, 125 and 480 | Varies |
| Gare Centrale (VIA Rail, Amtrak) | Walk north up Rue University and east along Sainte-Catherine, or take the metro from Bonaventure | About 20 min on foot |
| Old Montreal | Walk north up Boulevard Saint-Laurent, or take the orange line to Place-des-Armes and change | About 20 min on foot |
| Trudeau Airport | 747 bus to downtown, then metro or walk | About 1 hour |

Much of downtown is connected underground, so on a cold night you can walk from Complexe Desjardins and the Place-des-Arts metro to the square with very little time outside.
Tips for Visiting
- Dress properly. Montreal in December is often well below freezing, and the market is outdoors.
- Check the day before you go in November and early December, when the official schedule shows openings from Wednesday to Sunday.
- Go for the lights after 4 p.m., when it’s already dark.
- A few words of French go a long way with vendors, although most also speak English.
- Leave the suitcase behind. Snowy sidewalks and crowded chalets make luggage hard work.
