The Bolzano Christmas market (Bozner Christkindlmarkt) opens on Thursday 26 November 2026 at 17:00 with the lighting of the big tree in Piazza Walther, and stays open until Wednesday 6 January 2027. It’s the 35th edition, with about 120 wooden chalets running from Piazza Walther along Via Stazione and on to Piazza Duomo and Via Isarco. Bolzano is also the handiest base in South Tyrol for a market trip, since Merano, Bressanone and Trento are all a short train ride away.

Where the Stalls Are

The market fills the old town in a line you can walk in about ten minutes, so you can see all of it in one afternoon.
- Piazza Walther is the main square, with the big tree and most of the craft chalets: wool jackets, hats and felt slippers, wooden kitchen tools, and glass, wood and ceramic decorations. This year the tree is decorated with pieces made by children in hospital ceramics workshops.
- Via Stazione continues the stalls towards the station and has the children’s area.
- Piazza Duomo and Via Isarco host the stalls for artistic crafts. In 2026 there’s also a new light projection on the walls of the cathedral.
- Piazza Municipio has the nativity scene.
- Piazza del Grano has the Mercatino Solidale, the charity market.
- Piazza Mazzini, a short walk west of the centre, adds a smaller market on weekends from 27 November to 20 December.
Look for products with the Bolzano Mondo Comune stamp: for each one sold, one euro goes to charity.
What to Eat and Drink at the Bolzano Christmas Market
The food here is South Tyrolean, so expect more Alpine than Italian. A few things to try:
- Speck and other South Tyrolean cured meats.
- Fritters, apple strudel and the traditional Christmas biscuits.
- Mulled wine with cinnamon, or local apple juice if you’d rather skip the alcohol.
- Local red wines, Santa Maddalena and Lagrein, plus sparkling wine, grappa and local spirits at the Wine Lounge.
- Craft beer at the Beer Lounge. The Christmas Beer contest awards its prizes on 12 December.
Events and Things to Do in December
- San Nicolò visits Piazza Walther on 6 December, and the Krampus figures make appearances during the season.
- Historic trains run by the Italian railways (FS) arrive on 29 November and on 8, 13 and 20 December.
- Advent music in the squares and streets, concerts in the churches, and alpine horn players.
- For kids: a miniature electric train, the Find&Win quiz in the city museums, and a stand where you write postcards by hand with old inkwells.
- BOclassic, the New Year’s Eve road race, takes place on 31 December, when the market also has shorter hours.
If the weather turns, the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, home of Ötzi the Iceman, is a few minutes’ walk from Piazza Walther and makes a good indoor stop.
