Royal Albert Dock Liverpool
The history of Royal Albert Dock dates back to 1839, when dock-engineer Jesse Hartley proposed the building of a radical new dock on the western side of Salthouse Dock. It was officially opened in 1846 and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, who laid the foundation stone for the dock in 1845.
At the time, the dock's construction represented a significant engineering achievement. It required the manual removal of almost 3 million cubic meters of material using picks and shovels.
One of the busiest ports in the world during the early 20th century, Royal Albert Dock Liverpool handled more than 40% of the world's traffic. It has played an important role in Liverpool's economy and cultural life for years. However, with the fall of British Empire and the introduction of containerization, the dock was derelict and in need of repair by 1980s.
Despite its’ unfortunate history ending in the1970’s –and 1980’s, a historic waterfront complex was brought back on the map as an investment location and popular destination for tourists and locals alike. It is also very easy to access thanks to its comfortable vicinity to Liverpool Central and Lime Street.
