The Trento Christmas market opens on Friday 20 November 2026 and runs until Wednesday 6 January 2027, a week before most of the markets in South Tyrol. About 70 wooden huts fill Piazza Fiera, against the old city walls, and another 20 stand in Piazza Cesare Battisti, a few steps from the cathedral. The market draws over 500,000 visitors a year, and it’s the one in the region that stays open on Christmas Day, for a few hours in the afternoon.
Arriving by train? Leave your bags near Trento station and walk to Piazza Fiera in about 15 minutes.

Where the Stalls Are
Piazza Fiera is the main site, a long square on the southern edge of the old town with the medieval walls along one side. Most of the craft huts are here, along with the food area. Exhibitors come from Trentino, South Tyrol and other regions of northern Italy, and you’ll find Christmas decorations, candles, nativity figures and pictures made from pressed flowers. There’s a gift-wrapping service if you’re buying presents.
The second, smaller group of huts is in Piazza Cesare Battisti, a short walk north and right next to Piazza Duomo, so it’s easy to see both in one loop of the centre.
What to Eat at the Trento Christmas Market
The 16 huts of the Sapori del Mercatino food area serve sweet and savoury dishes from Trentino and Tyrol. Look out for:
- Tortel de patate, the Trentino potato pancake, eaten hot.
- Canederli, bread dumplings with speck or cheese.
- Dishes from the Valle dei Mocheni, a small German-speaking valley east of Trento.
- Pastries, hot chocolate and vin brulè (mulled wine).
- Parampampoli, a hot Trentino drink made with grappa, coffee and wine. It’s strong, so one is usually enough.
Things to Do Around the Market

Trento’s centre is small, and the market sits between its best-known sights. Piazza Duomo, with the Neptune fountain and the cathedral, is a couple of minutes from both market squares. The Buonconsiglio Castle, once home to the prince-bishops of Trento, is a 10-minute walk east, and the MUSE science museum, designed by Renzo Piano, is a good choice for families on a cold or rainy afternoon.
