What You’ll Find at the Madrid Christmas Market
This market is about the belén, the Spanish nativity scene. A large share of the stalls sell figures and everything you need to build one at home: the Holy Family and the three kings, shepherds, animals, cork for the hills, moss, tiny wells and bridges, and lights. There’s also an exhibition of handmade nativity scenes in the square.
The other big category is fun. Stalls are piled with wigs, glasses, crowns, fake moustaches and party hats, which people wear for Nochevieja and for 28 December, the Día de los Santos Inocentes, Spain’s version of April Fool’s Day. Add Christmas ornaments, zambombas (a traditional friction drum played at Christmas) and the big tree in the middle of the square, and you have the classic Madrid Christmas market photo.

A Short History
Madrid has held a Christmas market in this corner of the old town since the 17th century. It started in the nearby Plaza de Santa Cruz, selling fruit, vegetables, ornaments and gifts. In the 19th century the city fixed the location and regulated the sales: the Plaza Mayor became the place for turkeys, turrón and sweets, while Santa Cruz kept the nativity figures, toys and novelties. The canvas awnings were replaced by today’s stalls in the 1980s.
