cologne christmas markets

Cologne Carnival on 11 November is the day the city flips a switch. At exactly 11:11 am on Wednesday, 11 November 2026, the “fifth season” begins: Heumarkt and Alter Markt fill with costumes and confetti, Zülpicher Straße turns into one long street party, and the whole city sings along to Kölsch bands until late. Locals call it Elfter im Elften (the eleventh of the eleventh), and it is one of the biggest one-day parties in Germany.

This guide covers everything you need for 11.11 in Cologne 2026: where the action is, the glass ban and access rules, costume culture, how to get there, and what to do with your bag, because venues and barriers do not welcome backpacks. If you are planning for the February street carnival instead, read our separate Cologne Carnival guide to the Crazy Days.

What is Elfter im Elften?

Cologne Carnival is not a single week in February. The season officially opens on 11 November at 11:11 am and runs until Ash Wednesday, with the famous street carnival (Weiberfastnacht to Rosenmontag) as the grand finale. The number eleven is the “fool’s number” in Rhineland tradition, which is why everything happens at 11:11.

On the day itself, the Festkomitee Kölner Karneval and the city’s carnival societies present the coming session, and the designated Dreigestirn (the trio of Prince, Farmer and Maiden who lead the 2027 season) appears on stage at Heumarkt. For visitors, though, 11.11 is mostly about the street: tens of thousands of people in costume, live Kölsch music and a party that runs from morning until the early hours.

In 2026, 11 November falls on a Wednesday. Weekday editions are a little calmer than a Saturday 11.11, but the Altstadt and Zülpicher Straße still fill up by late morning, so arrive early.

Where to celebrate Cologne Carnival on 11.11

Heumarkt and Alter Markt (Altstadt)

The official session opening takes place on Heumarkt, organised by the Willi-Ostermann-Gesellschaft, with the stage programme broadcast live by WDR. Gates open around 9 am, the countdown and confetti cannon go off at 11:11, and the stage programme runs into the evening. Large video walls on Heumarkt and Alter Markt show the show to the roughly 30,000 people who pack the squares.

Entry to the fenced Heumarkt stage area is ticketed. Tickets are sold through the Willi-Ostermann-Gesellschaft shop (full-day and cheaper time-slot tickets have been offered in recent years), and the 2026 line-up is announced closer to the date. Check the official Altstadt opening page on koeln.de for the latest programme and prices. The streets and pubs around the squares are free to enjoy.

Zülpicher Straße (Kwartier Latäng)

The student quarter around Zülpicher Straße is where the young crowd goes. Bars, kiosks and the street itself turn into one open-air party from mid-morning. It is also the area with the strictest crowd control: the city fences off the whole quarter and only lets people in through two public entrances, near the Uni-Mensa and at the corner of Roonstraße and Beethovenstraße. When the street is full, entrances close and new arrivals are redirected to the Uniwiese, a fallback lawn with free water, toilets and no alcohol sales.

Residents, businesses and guests of closed events (with a ticket from the venue) get in through separate entrances; businesses receive city-issued access wristbands. If you want to party on Zülpicher Straße, be there before 10 am. Digital signs around the quarter show which entrances are open.

Südstadt and the neighbourhood pubs

The Südstadt around Chlodwigplatz and Severinstraße is the local, slightly more grown-up alternative: traditional Veedel pubs, arm-in-arm singing (Schunkeln), and Kölsch bands on small stages. Road closures here are only imposed when crowds require it. Other popular spots are the Belgian Quarter, Friesenstraße and the Ringe.

Tanzbrunnen and Lanxess Arena (right bank)

Across the Rhine in Deutz, the Tanzbrunnen hosts the family-friendly “Kölsche Countdown” with well-known Kölsch bands on 11.11.2026. The big ticketed arena show “Elfter im Elften” at the Lanxess Arena takes place a few days later, on Saturday 14 November 2026 (doors from 6:45 pm, tickets via Eventim), so you can combine both.

Cologne Carnival rules for 11.11: glass ban, access and what you cannot bring

The City of Cologne publishes a new security concept every year, usually in the last week of October, on stadt-koeln.de. The rules below are those applied in 2025 and are expected to continue in a similar form in 2026. Check the official pages a few days before you travel.

Security staff in numbered vests run the glass and entry checks at the barriers. There are first-aid points in the Kwartier Latäng and on the Altstadt riverbank, and streetwork teams hand out water and snacks in the main zones during the day.

Costumes, Kölsch and Alaaf: how to fit in

On 11.11 almost everyone wears a costume, and turning up in normal clothes makes you the odd one out. Anything goes, from animal onesies to pirates, but red and white (rut un wieß) are the Cologne colours and always work. Bring a costume from home; shops in the centre sell last-minute accessories but prices climb in the days before. It is November, so layer up: a warm costume beats a pretty one when you are standing outside from 9 am.

A few words go a long way:

  • Kölle Alaaf! The Cologne carnival cry. “Helau” belongs to Düsseldorf and Mainz and will earn you a look.
  • Kölsch is both the local beer and the local dialect. It comes in a small 0.2 l glass called a Stange, and the waiter (Köbes) keeps bringing refills until you put your beer mat on top of the glass.
  • Bützje is a friendly peck on the cheek, not a real kiss, and only if both people are happy with it.
  • Schunkeln is swaying arm in arm with strangers while the band plays. You will be pulled in; go with it.
  • The music: Höhner, Brings, Kasalla, Cat Ballou and Klüngelköpp are the big Kölsch bands. Everyone knows the words, and after a day you will too.

Hungry? Look for Halve Hahn (a rye roll with cheese, not chicken), Himmel un Ääd (black pudding with apple and potato) and Mutzen, small sugared doughnuts sold at carnival stands.

Getting to Heumarkt and Zülpicher Straße on 11 November

Leave the car at home. Streets around Heumarkt and the whole Zülpicher quarter close from early morning (around 6 to 8 am) and reopen in the small hours, no-parking zones apply from late October, and trucks over 7.5 t are banned from the centre. Public transport runs but with diversions, so allow roughly double your normal travel time.

DestinationHow to get there
Heumarkt / Alter Markt10–15 min walk from Köln Hauptbahnhof via the Cathedral; Stadtbahn lines 1, 7 and 9 to Heumarkt (expect diversions and closed stops); Deutzer Brücke on foot from Köln Messe/Deutz station
Zülpicher StraßeStadtbahn 9 is diverted and lines 12 and 15 skip Zülpicher Platz from the morning; line 18 is split at Barbarossaplatz. Get off at Rudolfplatz or Barbarossaplatz and walk to the Roonstraße or Uni-Mensa entrance
Südstadt / ChlodwigplatzStadtbahn 15, 16 and 17 to Chlodwigplatz (check for closures on the day)
Tanzbrunnen / Lanxess ArenaKöln Messe/Deutz station (S-Bahn, regional and ICE trains), then 10 min on foot; Stadtbahn 1, 3, 4, 9 to Bf Deutz/Lanxess Arena
From Cologne Bonn AirportS19 or RE6 to Köln Hbf (about 15 min) or to Köln Messe/Deutz

Tip for day-trippers: Köln Messe/Deutz on the right bank is far less crowded than the Hauptbahnhof on 11.11 and has direct trains to Cologne Bonn Airport, Frankfurt Airport and ICE routes. Check KVB for live tram changes on the day.

What to do with your bag at Cologne Carnival

This is the part most guides skip. Large bags are not allowed on the Heumarkt event site, the Zülpicher quarter bans bulky items, and every barrier means a bag check and a queue. Pubs and clubs are packed shoulder to shoulder, so nobody wants a backpack in their face, and a rucksack full of glass bottles will simply be emptied at the entrance. Add confetti, spilled Kölsch and November rain, and your luggage is better off somewhere dry.

If you are arriving by train or flying in for the day, drop your luggage before you head into the crowd and keep only a small cross-body bag with phone, cash, ID and a plastic bottle of water. Most hotels will hold bags for guests, but check-out time on 11 November is usually long before the party ends, and the lockers at the Hauptbahnhof fill up early on busy days.
