- The US Capitol building was almost burned to the ground in the War of 1812 by the British troops. They invaded Washington after defeating the US forces and set fire to a number of important political buildings, including the Capitol.
- Since 1909, there has been an entire subway station dedicated to the Capitol. It was made to make traveling easier for congressmen and politicians from their houses and Senate to the Capitol building.
- President George Washington laid the cornerstone of the Capitol in 1793. So, when he passed away in 1799, congress decided to honor him by burying him in a portion of the Capitol building called the Crypt, but it wasn’t carried out.
- The construction of the US Capitol dome was completed 37 years later in 1866, as it was made from thousands of pounds of cast iron and has a statue on top that represents freedom.
- From 1899 to 1910, it was considered unlawful to construct a building in Washington DC that was taller than the Capitol building, it could be of the same height but not taller.
