Karlsplatz is a famous shopping square in the metropolitan capital of the Free State of Bavaria. Globally it is recognized as Karlsplatz, whereas the locals like to call it Stachus, which creates confusion with its name, Karlsplatz-Stachus.

Originally the official name given to this square was Karlsplatz by Elector Karl Theodor, who took over the Bavarian rule after the death of last Wittelsbach in 1777. However, the natives of Munich didn’t accept the changes he made and therefore started calling it Stachus. Even the announcements at S and U Bahn train lines don’t use the official name.

Since WWII, Karlsplatz München has been a busy shopping hub and a starting point for Munich’s busy transportation network. In fact, a lot of the city tours begin from this square.
