The Plaza Independencia occupies four blocks and is an example of man’s work in an arid area. The square was founded in 1861, after the earthquake, marking the center of the new city. Mendoza Independence Frieze is the main monument of the square. This sculptural group is called “La Libertad, esa gesta anónima” (Liberty, that anonymous deed) and is the work of the sculptor Eliana Molinelli from Mendoza. On the left frieze is an indigenous woman with a cross symbolizing America’s conquest and evangelization and scenes of slavery and liberation. The right side depicts the family, immigrant workers, and culture.
