Mainz at a glance
Mainz is a German city, capital of the Rhineland-Palatinate region. It is located a few kilometers from Frankfurt am Main and very close to Wiesbaden.
It is served by two airports: Frankfurt am Main and Frankfurt-Hahn.
Mainz is renowned throughout Germany for its beautiful cathedral (second only to Cologne) and Carnival. It was also the birthplace of Johann Gutenberg, the inventor of printing. Every year the Night of John (in June) is dedicated to him.
Mainz is also famous for the production of excellent wines, so much so that together with Verona, Florence, Porto, and Bordeaux, it is part of a circuit called Great Capitals of Wine.
Main Attractions
If you are touring the city, don't forget to visit the Cathedral of Saint Martin, an imposing Romanesque-style building that has been standing for 1000 years.
Another place not to be missed is the Gutenberg Museum, among the oldest museums in the world dedicated to printing.
If you love outdoor activities, then you should try the Rheinsteig, an atmospheric hiking trail along the eastern bank of the Rhine River.
Don't miss the Gothic-style St. Stephen's Collegiate Church, known for its windows created by Marc Chagall.
