Known as Castillo de Santa Bárbara, Santa Barbara Castle is a prominent landmark and historical fortress located on Mount Benacantil in Alicante, Spain. It stands at a height of 166 meters (545 feet) above the city and is the best free point to enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding region from the edge of Alicante city.
Its history dates back to the 9th century, with various civilizations occupying the site over the centuries, including the Romans, Moors, and Christians. It played a significant role in defending the city and served as a strategic military stronghold. Santa Barbara Castle is named after its reconquest by King Alfonso X the Wise in 1248, which occurred on December 4, the feast day of Saint Barbara.
Alicante Santa Barbara Castle lift is an easy way to get up to the castle's summit (the entrance to the lift is located right in front of Postiguet Beach, and the price is 2.70€). Also it can be reached on foot from Parque de La Ereta or via the defensive walls from Avenida de Alfonso el Sabio. By car, you can reach it from Calle de Vazquez de Mella, with ample parking available at the top. Alicante Santa Barbara Castle opening hours are from Monday to Sunday: 10:00 AM – 11:00 PM (last lift ride at 10:30 PM)
