The Isle of Wight, United Kingdom

The Isle of Wight, England's second-largest island, is situated 2 miles off the Hampshire coast to the south. Covering 148 square miles (380 square kilometers) with a population of approximately 150,000, it's a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with diverse landscapes. It is situated in the English Channel, separated from the mainland by the Solent, a narrow strait that provides the island with a natural boundary and a distinct identity. The island is easily accessible by ferry, making it a convenient and attractive destination for visitors from all over the UK and beyond. The capital town is Newport, and the largest towns include Ryde, Sandown, and Cowes.

How do I get to the Isle of Wight?

Getting to Isle of Wight is a straightforward journey. The Isle of Wight has two airfields, Sandown and Bembridge, but flying directly to them is improbable as they mainly cater to light aircraft. If you're looking for a more substantial airport, Southampton Airport (SOU), located 20 miles north of the island. From there, you have several transportation options:

Taxi and Uber services are available for a convenient transfer to Portsmouth or Lymington. The ride typically takes around 35 minutes.

Southampton Airport Parkway Station offers a direct 1-hour train ride to Portsmouth, and it's within walking distance from the terminal.

Economical bus services by various companies provide a longer but cost-effective route to Portsmouth, taking approximately an hour and a half.

If you prefer to have your own vehicle, major car rental agencies like Alamo, Budget, and Avis operate at SOU, and it's advisable to pre-book.

To reach the Isle of Wight from the UK mainland, the two main ferry ports are Portsmouth and Lymington, served by Wightlink. Here are the ferry options:

High-speed catamarans offer a swift 25-minute crossing from Portsmouth to Ryde, with at least 12 departures per day in low season.

If you have a rental car, take the vehicle and passenger ferry from Portsmouth to Fishbourne, which takes 45 minutes and has a minimum of 19 departures per day in low season.

Lymington to Yarmouth offers vehicle and passenger ferries taking about 45 minutes, with approximately 8 departures per day in low season. We highly recommend to pre-book your ferry transfer, especially during the high season when there are more daily departures.
