With less than 200mm of rainfall a year, this is Europe’s only subtropical desert, but don’t let that scare you, there are many things to do here. You can  climb  El Fraile, a long extinct volcano 500 metres high that gives you an amazing view of the sea, you can see abandoned mining villages in the park, and also secluded beaches that you can have almost all to yourself. Last but not least, be sure to check out the Almarìa air raid shelters, underground galleries for civilian protection during the Spanish Civil War, they are Europe’s longest ones that are open for tourists.
